Closely after the First World War, Bratislava was named Wilson's city to honor the American President Woodrow Wilson, who supported Slovaks and Czechs in their fight for freedom and a democratic state. At the end of 19th and beginning 20th century, Štefániková street was a luxurious boulevard of the representative class with palaces of wealthy townspeople and aristocracy.
